Dangerous Cold Advances Into the Southeast

The dangerous cold Arctic blast continues to sweep into the eastern US this morning.  A widespread swath of temperatures below -20°F have now encompassed a large portion of the northern Plains and into the Midwest.   Freezing temperatures have also pushed to the far Southeast coast, including southern Texas.  A very impressive temperature gradient of more than 100°F has set up over the eastern US like we were expecting.  With temperatures near 80°F over southern Florida compared to close -30F over the Midwest, it actually puts it closer to 110°F.  The atmosphere has to create strong gusty winds to dry and balance out the extreme temperature differences, which will lead to brutally cold wind chill values.   You can tell where the low pressure system is spinning up just based on looking at the current temperatures.  Note how over Indiana its actually colder than to the north over Michigan, which shows where the center of circulation has set up and created a minor warm front over the Ohio Valley into the Great Lakes.  Snow will push into New England and continue throughout much of the day.  Tonight will be extremely cold behind the front as skies clear, leading record breaking low temperatures for many locations.
