Strong Cold Blast Pushes Deep Into Southern US Overnight

The latest cold blast following the impressive northern US winter storm has brought in much colder temperatures overnight to all of the central and eastern US.  Compared the same time yesterday, much of the eastern US is now 25-40°F colder. Specifically, temperatures below freezing pushed deep into the Gulf Coast states, increasing national heating demand.  Over the highest use states of the Midwest and Northeast, temperatures fell into the single digits and teens, with even a handful of locations dropping below zero. Temperatures will gradually warm over the coming days under relatively quiet weather, especially over the southern US, before another reinforcing cold blast sweeps through the northern US this weekend.  A very active and stormy pattern will continue into next week and likely through the rest of the month.

The temperatures Thursday morning across the US were quite chilly with most locations in the 20s and 30s, except over the Great Lakes and Northeast where lows were in the single digits and teens.

The only weather in the US today will be near Maine as wrap around snow bands gradually fizzle.
